Marvin Shoob

Marvin Shoob grew up in South Carolina and attended the Georgia Institute of Technology. Shoob served in World War II where he earned the Bronze Star Medal for valor. After the war, he attended the University of Georgia School of Law, graduating in 1948. He married Janice Paradies, and, in 1949, joined the law firm Nall & Miller.

He later founded Shoob, McClain, Merritt & Lyle. Active in Democratic politics, he was treasurer of the Fulton County Democratic Party. He served as finance chair for Senator Sam Nunn, and in 1979, President Jimmy Carter nominated him to become a federal judge for the Northern District of Georgia. He served in that position for 37 years, retiring in 2016.

He possessed a reputation for ethical leadership, and U.S. District Judge Timothy Batten said of Schoob, “He was a great judge who was blessed with uncommon wisdom and a tender heart.” The Atlanta Bar Association awarded Shoob with the Logan E. Bleckley Award in 2015, and the Fulton County Daily Report recognized him as a “Lifetime Achiever.
